Toll Collection System in India

There are many toll plazas where people have to pay the toll tax to move further. New technologies are now being implemented so that the commuters do not get embarrassed due to the long queue. The traffic volume is increasing every day and leads to congestion on the toll plazas. This congestion n also leads to loss of fuel and time. Other problems that arise due to this condition is noise and air pollution.

Because of all these situations, System Hybrid toll collection system has been developed which helps in tax collection easily. There are many technologies implemented in this system so that there is no congestion and time consumption. These technologies include infrared radio communication and radio frequency identification.

Tag on the vehicle

There is a tag fixed on a vehicle and the roadside unit which has a unique identification number which helps in identifying the vehicle. A user can get this tag by when he registers himself and the vehicle to the system. The system has the facility of deducting the toll tax automatically from the user’s account.

The traveler does not need to stop on the toll and so he can move smoothly if he registers for the tag. This will reduce the congestion on the toll plaza. Toll plazas in India are still not automatic and are working on manual mode.

Benefits of Electronic Toll Collection System

There are many benefits of the electronic toll system which will help the travelers, government and toll operators. Some of them are mentioned here.

  • There is no traffic congestion on the plazas.
  • The payment is easy as the money will automatically be deducted from the traveler’s account.
  • The manpower will e reduced which will help the toll operators to reduce operating costs.
  • The staff at toll plazas will be saved from toxic gases emitted by the vehicles.

Technologies used in Electronic toll system

There are many technologies used in this toll system which are being described here.

Infrared

The infrared is being used since the year 2000 and now a roadside unit also has this technology for sharing data with the unit installed on the vehicle.

Dedicated Short Range Communication

This is a system which helps in communication from both directions that is between roadside unit and on-board unit installed in the vehicle.

Radio Frequency Identification

This establishes the communication medium with the help of radio waves. Active and passive communication can be easily established with this technology.

Automatic Vehicle Classification

Toll management can be made easy with the help of automatic vehicle classification technology. It helps the toll collector in providing data for monitoring and controlling the toll collection.

Wrapping Up

The electronic toll management system is being installed on many toll plazas so that there is no congestion and the staff at the plaza shall also get rid of the poisonous gases emitted from the vehicles. This will also reduce the time of travel and embarrassment of being late in reaching the destination.
